The Governing Council of the United Nations Development Program established World Population Day in 1989. This day was inspired by another celebratory day know as the Five Billion Day, established in 1987; marking the world population at five billion.

World Population Day is a time to focus on commitment and action to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV/AIDS, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect.
